The new mandate will centre on EU policy, costs, prices, water and labour.
Cristóbal Aguado, president of AVA-ASAJA, has been re-elected vice-president of Spain’s national farmers’ organisation ASAJA after Pedro Barato’s candidacy won 90% of the votes at the organisation’s electoral assembly in Madrid.
Aguado will continue in ASAJA’s national leadership for the next four years and is expected to remain responsible for the fruit sector, reflecting the weight of the Valencian Community in Spanish citrus production.
ASAJA’s new mandate will focus on five priorities: European agricultural policy, production costs, farmgate prices, water availability and labour. For fruit and vegetable producers, the agenda includes the post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy, trade agreements with third countries, pest and disease control, irrigation needs and access to workers.
Water remains one of the organisation’s main concerns. ASAJA is calling for more practical solutions, fewer restrictions and a stronger focus on farmers’ needs, especially in areas dependent on irrigation.
The organisation also pointed to the recent €165 million fertiliser support agreement as an example of the results of sustained pressure. The aid ranges from €22 to €38 per hectare for rainfed land and close to €100 per hectare for irrigated land.
Barato said ASAJA will also continue working on profitability, opening new export markets and labour shortages. During the new term, he plans to promote a reform of the organisation’s statutes to adapt ASAJA to future challenges.
