Maersk upgrades digital monitoring across reefer fleet

Maersk has started replacing connectivity devices across its refrigerated container fleet with a new generation of IoT technology.

Around 30% of the reefer fleet had already been upgraded by June, with the company planning to install the new equipment across all refrigerated containers over the coming years.

The devices have greater processing capacity and support 4G and 5G connectivity, while remaining compatible with older 2G and 3G networks. They can also draw power from solar panels to help maintain continuous connectivity.

Maersk said the upgrade is intended to provide more consistent real-time data throughout a refrigerated shipment. The company is also completing the deployment of a new digital connectivity platform across 450 vessels.

The technology will support Maersk’s Captain Peter visibility service, which allows customers to follow refrigerated cargo from container sealing through to final delivery. Maersk said the longer-term aim is to move beyond basic visibility and use shipment data to provide customers with more actionable information.
