China remains dominant as India adds a new route for fresh fruit.
Vietnam’s durian exports were estimated at USD 1.97 billion in the first eight months of 2026, up 28.3% year on year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. China alone accounted for USD 1.85 billion, 29.9% more than during the same period of 2025.
The pace had been even stronger through July. Seven-month exports reached around USD 1.47 billion, up 44.1%, with more than 95% going to China. July also brought a new market: India formally began allowing imports of fresh Vietnamese durian. Vietnam now exports the fruit to more than 20 countries and territories.
The supply base approved for export is also expanding. Vietnam currently has 1,599 active growing-area codes and 281 packing facilities for durian. On August 14, Chinese customs approved another 401 production-area codes and 166 packing facilities.
Export controls are becoming more digital at the same time. Since July 1, the ministry has been using an electronic traceability system for agricultural products, including export durian. Testing capacity for food-safety requirements is also being expanded.
Vietnam expects around 2.08 million tonnes of durian from roughly 200,000 hectares in 2026. The ministry is now focusing on broader market access, cold storage and logistics, processing, residue control and stronger traceability as it looks to reduce risks associated with heavy dependence on one destination.
