Heavy rain and limited sunshine have affected vegetable crops, while onion supplies are expected to remain plentiful.
Vegetable buyers in Japan could face higher prices for cabbage, broccoli, daikon radish and several other products in November. Meanwhile, onions and taro are expected to cost less than usual, according to the latest forecast from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).
The ministry's outlook covers vegetables supplied to Tokyo's Central Wholesale Market and is based on information collected from major growing regions and wholesale companies.
Wet weather affects supplies
September's prolonged rainfall, typhoons and limited sunshine delayed planting and affected crop development in several production areas.
Cabbage supplies from Chiba, Ibaraki and Aichi are expected to fall below average, with some crops showing slower growth and smaller heads. Broccoli production has also been delayed by wet weather, which is likely to push prices higher.
Daikon radish and Chinese cabbage are expected to follow a similar pattern, with lower shipments and above-average prices.
Carrot prices could increase during the second half of November as supplies from Chiba become more important. Lettuce prices are also expected to remain above normal, although improved weather in October should help supplies recover later in the month.
Onions expected to cost less
The picture is different for onions. Production in Hokkaido, which supplies most of the onions entering the Tokyo market, has progressed well, with larger bulbs and above-average shipments anticipated.
Tomato, spinach, eggplant and potato prices are expected to remain close to their usual levels.
MAFF compares its forecasts with the average conditions recorded over the previous five years.
