The Coquimbo region (Chile) is facing a serious agricultural crisis due to a severe drought that is seriously affecting rural communities.
According to the National Agricultural Society (SNA) and the Surveillance Boards of the Coquimbo rivers, the following measures are urgently needed by producers:
1. Enable the wells that are already ready to operate, under the responsibility of the General Water Directorate (DGA), to guarantee water supply and sanitation.
2. Suspend the auctions and the collection of contributions in the properties affected by the drought, where production has been halted due to this harsh event.
3. Completely restructure debts, from bank loans to electricity bills, in the areas declared as disaster areas.
It is crucial to make visible and respond to this major crisis. Solidarity and support are essential for producers, irrigators and farm workers.
