Despite the historic drought that some parts of South Africa is experiencing, the harvest of table grapes for the 2017-18 season will be close to the average of the last 5 years.
The South African Table Grape Industry (SATI) estimates that the volume for the 2017-18 season will approach the 2012-13 to 2016-17 season average of 57.9 million cartons (1 carton = 4.5 kilograms).
A severe drought affects many areas of production and has resulted in severe water restrictions. The reduction reaches 50% for agricultural uses. Meteorological conditions and expected rainfall levels in October could alleviate producer pressure by having a positive impact on the crop.
