Iran and China have reached agreements that allow Iranian fresh citrus to access the Chinese market
A few days ago, the agreements were signed virtually between the Iranian Minister of Agriculture and the head of Chinese customs. Several fresh Iranian citrus fruits including oranges, tangerines and lemons can now enter China, provided they meet the conditions of the required phytosanitary and safety protocols previously negotiated between the 2 countries.
Iran produces about 5.5 million tons of citrus per year and the value of its exports reaches about 15.2 million USD. The main destinations for Iranian exports are Azerbaijan, Armenia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kazakhstan.
In parallel with the signing of the citrus fruit agreement, the 2 countries also concluded an agreement concerning the export to China of Iranian honey, the annual production of which amounts to approximately 130,000 tons.
Currently Iran exports only 0.5 million USD of agricultural products to China, but this amount could increase considerably with the opening of the Chinese market to fresh citrus fruits and honey.
