In Spain, moderate temperatures have favored the production of melon, watermelon, pear and apple, although consumption has been low. Pear production in Catalonia will fall by 30% due to the drought, with a forecast of 80,426 tons, according to Spanish media.
A hail storm in Lleida has reduced the production of peaches, nectarines, pears and apples by more than 60%. In Murcia, the melon and watermelon area has fallen by 7.4% and 6.6% respectively. Despite good production, melon and watermelon producers fear a drop in prices in July.
Stone fruit, especially cherries, has increased production by 10%, although prices are not favorable. The pear and apple campaign in Catalonia is estimated at 887,300 tons, 18.8% more than last year, but consumption has dropped by 2.4% for apples and 15% for pears, reaching its lowest level in ten years.
