Philippine durian and mangosteen test Canadian market

Nearly one tonne of Philippine durian and mangosteen is being shipped to Canada in two trial consignments, according to the Department of Agriculture. The move adds another potential destination for the country’s high-value fresh fruit exports.

Two cities, two shipments

The first consignment, sent to Vancouver on 23 September, contained 300kg of durian and 120kg of mangosteen. A second shipment for Toronto, scheduled for 24 September, comprised another 300kg of durian and 200kg of mangosteen.

Together, the two shipments amount to 600kg of durian and 320kg of mangosteen.

Export reach widens

The trial follows efforts to broaden the Philippines’ agricultural export base beyond established markets. The same exporter has already completed three air shipments of fresh durian to France and is continuing weekly deliveries there.

For Canada, the immediate test will be whether trial volumes can develop into regular business, with supply consistency, freight costs and fruit quality likely to determine future shipments.
