This week, five vessels with 28.000 cartons (518 tons) of premium EnvyTM apple from T&G Global are departing from the Napier Port in New Zealand to China and South East Asian markets. Last week, T&G air freighted the product to China and Malaysia.
Craig Betty, T&G’s Director of Operations, says the company expects to export a crop of EnvyTM apples to consumers around the world in 2021, despite tight shipping schedules and a global container shortage.
During the New Zealand export season, T&G will export around 2 million cartons (200 million apples) of New Zealand grown EnvyTM to 60 countries, reflecting the high demand for their apples in global markets, especially in Asia and the U.S.
In 2021, T&G and its partner growers around the world will grow, pack and commercialize 5.5 million cartons of EnvyTM apple globally. Due to a growing demand, the company is increasing plantings in both hemispheres. By 2030, New EnvyTM plantings will produce 10 million cartons.
EnvyTM apples will appear at international markets in late April.
EnvyTM apple refers to the Scilate variety. Developed in New Zealand, by Plant and Food Research, it was patented in 2009. In the same year T&G, the owner of the EnvyTM trademark, started supplying to the United States via its marketing partner Oppy.
Now, EnvyTM is grown under license by T&G in New Zealand, Australia, the U.S., Asia, Chile, the UK, and France. It is marketed in the U.S. by Oppy, Rainier Fruit Co and CMI Orchards.
