Since last October, the Catalan cooperative of organic producers has been certified "Venda de Proximitat, Circuit Curt/Local sales, short circuits" by the Catalan agricultural authorities.
This guarantees that the producers' organization sells directly to retailers without any other intermediaries. "Using the label on the product and at the point of sale gives organic specialty stores, our main customers, a competitive advantage over supermarkets," said Meritxell Román, CEO of Hortec. Consumers who value locality, seasonality and sustainability will be well informed.
Catalonia accounts for 60% of Hortec's sourcing, the rest of Spain for 35% and imports for just 5%. "It's not so ecological to consume organic products from overseas, but we still import basic references like kiwi, pineapple, as well as specialties usually consumed by vegans like ginger, turmeric".
Despite the pandemic and inflation, Hortec's sales have remained fairly stable. The cooperative now has 29 active farmer-members and customers in Catalonia, Madrid and the Balearic Islands.
