New European legislation for the organic sector

The European Commission wants to modernize the legislation to strengthen the confidence of buyers while encouraging the development of this demanding agriculture.

The European Commission wants to improve legislation of the organic sector to promote its development.

The organic sector is now valued at more than € 20 billion in sales, having registered a 4-fold increase in sales in 15 years. The European Commission wanted to improve the legislation for the sector to continue its development, with a proposal for new regulations on organic production and labeling of products from organic agriculture.

Designed to update and adapt the current legislation, and to maintain high standards, this proposal predicts to:

• strengthen and harmonize the rules applicable within the EU, but also the rules applicable to products imported into the EU; 
• improve controls; 
• facilitate the access of small farmers to organic farming; 
• adopt new rules on exports.

This proposal will be submitted to the European Parliament and the Council.
