Colombia’s Quindío opens new export route for Hass avocados

Quindío, a key agricultural region in central-western Colombia, has started exporting Hass avocados to Chile after meeting strict sanitary and phytosanitary requirements.
Colombia’s department of Quindío, located in the central-western region of the country and known for its agricultural output, has officially begun exporting Hass avocados to Chile. This follows the successful certification of production sites under Chile’s strict sanitary and phytosanitary protocols.
The export project was led from the municipality of Pijao, within Quindío, and focused on producing high-quality, traceable fruit that meets international food safety requirements. From planting to harvest, the process prioritised compliance with all technical and environmental standards.
Support was provided by the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA), which oversaw certification, pest control procedures, and technical validation. ICA also offered guidance on field monitoring and quality assurance, working with both large producers and smallholder farmers as part of the country’s agrarian reform and rural development strategy.
To meet Chile’s import standards, producers implemented strict traceability systems, installed pest monitoring traps, and adopted sustainable practices. These efforts ensured that the avocados were free from contaminants and met all health and safety criteria.
