Imports of fruit and vegetables in Spain grew until May

Vegetable imports grew by 8.6%.
Spanish imports of fresh fruit and vegetables between January and May reached 1,941,078 tonnes, which represents an increase of 3.76% on the previous year, according to local media. In terms of value, imports reached 2,272 million euros, an increase of 12.33%.
Imported vegetables totalled 989,459 tonnes, an increase of 8.6%. The main imported vegetables were potatoes (637,000 tonnes, +8.68%) and onions (89,978 tonnes, -11.88%). The increases in peppers (52,346 tonnes, +47%) and tomatoes (42,880 tonnes, -2%) stand out despite the strong domestic supply. Other significant increases were observed in cucumbers (9,986 tonnes, +40%), garlic (11,491 tonnes, +153%) and other vegetables (27,984 tonnes, +55%). The value of these vegetable imports was 760 million euros, a growth of 16.47%.
Fruit imports totalled 951,619 tonnes, with a slight decrease of 0.84%. However, avocado showed a dynamic performance with 93,456 tonnes (+5%) and a value of 229 million euros, followed by kiwi with 68,884 tonnes (+7%) for 143 million euros, melon with 56,951 tonnes (+9.80%) for 47.236 million euros and blueberry with 34,201 tonnes (+15.76%) for a value of 187 million euros.
