Chile eases cherry export rules for Vietnam

Chile has introduced new conditions for fresh cherry exports to Vietnam, giving suppliers an alternative to the lengthy cold treatment previously required for market access, according to the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG). The revised rules took effect on 22 September 2026.

New option replaces single-treatment route

Until now, Chilean cherries had to be kept at 0.5°C or below for at least 28 consecutive days during transit to control Cydia molesta and Cydia pomonella.

The new framework allows exporters to use a Systems Approach instead. Rather than depending on one post-harvest treatment, the system combines controls across production, packing and phytosanitary certification.

More flexibility ahead of the season

The change follows bilateral work between Chile and Vietnam and gives exporters more choice in how they meet import requirements.

For the industry, the practical benefit is greater flexibility in shipment preparation ahead of the 2026/27 cherry season, while Vietnam’s plant-health safeguards remain in place.
