The changes aim to improve clarity in administrative procedures.
Vietnam has updated its regulatory framework for agricultural biotechnology, introducing a simplified approval procedure for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) used in food products, according to the latest GAIN report by USDA. The measure is intended to streamline administrative processes while maintaining existing safety requirements.
Under the revised rules introduced in 2026, authorities consolidated separate approval procedures into a single process, reducing documentation steps and clarifying conditions for product authorisation. The updated framework confirms that biotechnology-derived food products can be approved once they are assessed as safe by the national regulatory authorities.
The regulation also recognises prior approvals granted in countries with established biotechnology oversight systems, allowing authorities to rely on existing safety evaluations when reviewing applications.
Clearer rules support predictable import conditions
The regulatory update aims to improve transparency and consistency in the approval process for imported food products. For exporters supplying processed foods and ingredients to Vietnam, clearer procedures can support planning and reduce compliance uncertainty.
Stable and predictable regulatory systems remain an important factor for maintaining reliable market access as Vietnam continues to expand its role in regional agricultural trade.
