The mango market in the United States has shown an increase in per capita consumption from 1.9 pounds (0.8 kilos) in 2005 to 3.6 pounds (1.6 kilos) in 2023. According to Ramon Ojeda, executive director of the National Mango Board (NMB), the fruit now ranks as the eleventh most consumed fruit in the country.
The NMB focuses on promoting mangos to US consumers. Its goal is to transform the fruit from an exotic to an everyday household item by educating about its taste and nutritional value.
The United States produces only 1% of the mango it consumes, mainly in states such as California, Florida, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. In addition, it has 21 supplier countries with phytosanitary programmes approved for export, including Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico.
