Slight decline in fruit and vegetable consumption in Spanish households in the first half of the year

Consumption of fresh vegetables increased by 2.1%.
In Spain, household consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables reached 3,367 million kilos in the first half of 2024, registering a slight decrease of 0.5% compared to the same period of 2023. Fruits were the most affected, with a drop of 1.9%, totaling 1,779 million kilos, highlighting the declines in orange (-12%), banana (-2.3%) and apple (-2%), according to data from the Panel of Food Consumption of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain (MAPA).
In contrast, consumption of fresh vegetables increased by 2.1%, driven by tomatoes (+9.5%) and peppers (+10%). Demand for potatoes decreased slightly (-1.6%).
Expenditure on fresh fruit and vegetables increased by 4% to 7,199 million euros, with expenditure on fruit up 5% and vegetables up 2.3%.
