Extreme weather after planting has affected tuber development
Rioja Alta is the main potato producing area in the Rioja region (Spain). Harvesting began in the second week of August, with expectations of lower production due to the reduced size of the tubers.
Recent rains have delayed harvesting, as it was necessary to wait until the soil was in optimal conditions. The area planted in 2024 has remained stable, with 570 hectares between mid-season and late varieties.
Extreme weather after planting has affected tuber development, reducing yields by 15% to 20%. In addition, Brexit has impacted the import of planting material, which has increased production costs.
Gregorio Lopez, from ARAG-Asaja, anticipates a possible increase in prices that could offset higher seed and fertilizer costs. The season will continue until October, with potatoes for fresh consumption beginning to be harvested in August.
