Mango and vegetable growers are among the beneficiaries of a large agricultural assistance program in Isabela province.
Farmers in the Philippine province of Isabela have received agricultural inputs worth PHP 1.208 billion (US$18.97 million) as authorities prepare for the possible effects of El Niño on crop production. The support includes planting materials and other supplies for fruit and vegetable growers, according to the Department of Agriculture's Cagayan Valley regional office.
Support for fruit and vegetable growers
The assistance includes seeds, pest-control products, biofertilizers, mango flowering inducers, fruit tree seedlings and vegetable seedlings.
Most of the funding was directed toward rice production, which received PHP 1.113 billion (US$17.48 million). Corn growers received PHP 92.78 million (US$1.46 million), while PHP 2.12 million (US$33,300) was allocated through the High Value Crops Development Program, which supports crops including fruits and vegetables.
Preparing for El Niño
Agricultural officials encouraged beneficiaries to use the supplies responsibly and work with local agricultural technicians to manage their crops during potentially difficult weather conditions.
The initiative is intended to help farmers maintain production and reduce the impact of El Niño on agricultural livelihoods and food supplies in the region.
