The situation is difficult for the citrus sector
FJ
Crop idling, packinghouses stalled, inactive packing facilities.
California citrus production is in a delicate situation. Conflicts paralyze 29 ports on the West Coast for nearly nine months causing severe delays to shipments. Fruit growers (apples, pears ) are right on their export season to Asia.
The citrus industry seems even more affected. Warmer temperatures have accelerated the maturity of fruit , but port conflicts lead to delays and cancellations of shipments . While the harvest is done in slow motion, packinghouses are stalled and some packaging facilities are inactive.
Professionals believe that California is losing 25% of its export capacity . Stressing that foreign competition begins to fill the void in some markets, such as Korea .
