The 2023-2024 mango season in Peru is characterised by atypical prices and worrying situations.
Local producers point out that there is currently intense price competition in the sector, driven by the shortage of available fruit and the need to meet trade commitments.
However, there are other factors that add to the concern. The precariousness of the law in the country is exposed by the increase in theft of fruit at various stages of the production chain, from the field to the packing plant. The lack of security and the lack of intervention on the part of the authorities contribute to this problem.
This situation, says a local grower, is leading to a constant breach of contracts and the cancellation of commercial agreements. He adds that the law does not seem to be enforced and it is extremely difficult to do business under these circumstances.
