Sad findings. The European Union wastes more food than the volume of agricultural products it imports.
According to a recent report by the environmental organization Feedback EU, in 2021 the EU imported almost 138 million tonnes of agricultural products and the latest estimates show that the EU wastes 153.5 million tonnes of food every year.
According to the different data, food waste in the EU can be broken down by sector to 89.8 million tonnes in primary production, 15.4 million tonnes in product processing, 5.3 million tonnes in wholesale and retail trade, 10.5 million tonnes in catering, and 32.5 million tonnes in households.
This volume of food waste costs businesses and households in the EU around EUR 143 billion per year. Moreover, it would be the source of at least 6% of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions.
Faced with this situation, an international movement of 43 organizations from 20 EU countries plans to ask the European authorities for stricter regulations in order to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030, across all sectors, from production to consumers.
