In Egypt, the 2023/24 citrus export season kicked off at the beginning of December, some ten days ahead of schedule.
According to local media reports, EAEC (Egyptian Agricultural Export Council) expects to export 2.3 million tonnes of citrus fruit in the 2023/24 marketing year. This represents an increase of 15% on the 2 million tonnes exported in the previous season.
Oranges generally account for 85% of Egyptian citrus exports, the remainder being mandarins and grapefruit.
In terms of destinations, the European Union is a major market (458,000 tonnes of oranges in the previous season), but Egypt is seeking to increase its exports to Asian markets, notably the Philippines, Japan and Thailand.
