All set for entry of Chilean peaches and apricots into Chinese market

A delegation from China's General Administration of Customs (GACC) recently conducted on-site inspections in orchards and packing facilities in Chile. This review is part of the routine inspection process mandated by China, paving the way for the entry of Chilean peaches and apricots into the Chinese market. The inspections ensure adherence to bilateral protocols between the two nations, signaling the initiation of exports.
In 2022, the Chilean national peach orchard span reached 1,851.2 hectares, with the majority concentrated in the O'Higgins region (53%) and the Valparaíso region (20%). Apricots cover 528.3 hectares, primarily found in Valparaíso (39%) and the Metropolitan Region (32%), according to data from the Odepa-Ciren Fruit Census.
In the same year, Chile exported 270,000 tons of stone fruits, comprising 59% plums, 31% nectarines, 10% peaches, and 0.38% apricots. China emerged as the predominant destination, importing 134,000 tons (50%), followed by the United States with 52,000 tons (19%). The figures underscore the promising potential for Chilean peaches and apricots in the global market.
With China annually importing around 40,000 tons of stone fruits, Chile and Australia currently dominate the market as principal suppliers. The synergy between Chilean and Chinese production sets the stage for success, with both countries representing over 90% of the stone fruit market share between 2022 and 2023. This trend positions Chile favorably, poised to capitalize on the growing demand for these fruits.
