In order to ensure supplies for the domestic market, the Belarusian government has decided to temporarily restrict exports of carrots and beetroot.
The government's decision is reported in the local media. Resolution no. 341 dated 8 May provides for the introduction of a licence for the export of carrots and beetroot for a period of 3 months.
This licence, issued with the agreement of the Ministry of Agriculture and the regional executive committees, should make it possible to better control volumes and ensure that the domestic market is supplied with the entire national production.
In 2018, according to WITS data, Belarus exported 12,545 tonnes of root vegetables (carrots, turnips, beetroot), mainly to Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, Poland and Kazakhstan. Belarus imported 3,528 tonnes of root vegetables in 2018, mainly from Russia, Poland, Israel, the Netherlands and Lithuania.
