Poland is the 3rd largest carrot producer in the European Union, after Germany and France. But Polish carrot production has fallen by 29.8% in 6 years.
Local media report that carrot production in Poland reached 827,000 tonnes in 2017, but only 580,000 tonnes in 2023. That's -29.8% in 6 years.
This decline is attributed to droughts caused by climate change, which now occur almost every year. High temperatures and a lack of rainfall have affected various areas of Poland, impacting on agricultural production. According to experts, drought is becoming an increasingly serious problem that could, in the long term, threaten the country's food security.
To compensate for this drop in domestic production, carrot imports have risen, notably from Egypt, but especially from Germany. Germany has forecast a 50% increase in the value of its carrot and turnip exports to Poland between 2022 and 2023.
