At the foot of the Andes, garlic has become king and saw its planted area increase by 32.4%.
In the foothills of the Andes, near Mendoza, garlic has become the most important vegetable in the region.
Areas planted with garlic rose 32.4% and now account for 15,915 hectares compared to 12,019 in previous years. In three years (2009-2011) the increase has been 86%.
This increase can be explained by good prices for export which have led to the proliferation of farms. Strong demand from China in recent years has
coincided with a decline in domestic production which has boosted the international price.
The largest production area is located in San Carlos (4,055 ha), Tupungato (3,186) and Maipú (2,641 ha). Production by region: Uco Valley (57% of the total), Maipú and Luján Guaymallén (22%), and Las Heras Lavalle pui (8%).
