In South Korea, the pear sector is in the process of contracting. Despite a slight increase in production, due to favorable weather conditions, the areas dedicated to pears continue to decrease totaling less than 10 000 hectares for the first time.

According to a USDA GAIN report, for the 2019/20 season, pear production in South Korea is expected to increase by 3.4% to 210,000 tonnes, thanks to significantly better weather conditions compared to the previous year.

However, planted areas will continue to decline, about 7% compared to the previous campaign and will total only 9,625 hectares.

This is the first time the sector has recorded a total area of less than 10,000 hectares. For the previous season, total area decreased by 5% to 10,303 hectares. In the last 20 years, the total area has fallen by about -62% after the record of 25,719 hectares recorded for the 2000/01 season.
