Turkiye's cherry production is expected to be lower than last year's record, but despite the decline, cherry exports are expected to reach a record level.
For the 2024/25 marketing year, the FAS report issued by the USDA, the US Department of Agriculture, forecasts total cherry production in Turkiye at 900,000 tonnes, down 5% from the previous season. This volume is divided into 700,000 tonnes of sweet cherries and 200,000 tonnes of sour cherries, intended for industry.
Despite the decline in production, fresh cherry exports are expected to reach a record level, according to the report, at 90,000 tonnes, up 7.8% from the 83,452 tonnes exported in the previous season. Demand, particularly in EU markets, remains strong and profitable for producers. In the previous marketing year, the top 3 destinations were Germany (26,673 tonnes), Russia (22,638 tonnes) and Iraq (10,131 tonnes).
The area planted with cherries for this 2024/25 marketing year is expected to reach 99,300 hectares, divided into 80,000 hectares for sweet cherries and 19,300 hectares for sour cherries. Cherry production is concentrated in a few regions, in the west and centre of the country, in the provinces of Izmir (14%), Manisa (6%), Afyonkarahisar (9%) and Konya (8%).
