Greek cherry season is going strong
Thanks to COVID-19 lockdown was entered in a timely manner, all Greece retail business was opened earlier in comparison with other European and Eastern countries. Farmers had no problems with workers for harvesting that allowed cherry season to run at full speed.
The packing process of Greek Cherries started on May 26, late by a week, because of the few days of light rain. Nevertheless, quantity and quality for the early and mid-early varieties was and still is satisfactory.
The Protofanousi fruits S.A, specializing in the sale of fruit, commented that the company already handled over 2.500 tons of cherry while being in the season for only 3 weeks. During the first week of packaging, incoming quantities were limited to 80 tons per day, while by mid-June Proto is packing 150 to 160 tons of fresh cherries daily.
Given that the weather remains nice, the varieties that follow including Ferrovia, Kordia, Regina and Germensdorfer will be arriving to company customers’ warehouses until the end of July that marks the end of the season.
