Mexico leads Latin America in fruit and vegetable consumption, according to the results of a 2023 survey conducted by Statista Consumer Insight. Some 86% of adults in Mexico say they regularly include these products in their diet, reflecting a healthy eating pattern and greater access to fruit and vegetables, thanks to robust domestic production.
Globally, Mexico and Argentina lead the statistics with the same percentage of adults consuming fruit and vegetables, closely followed by Brazil. In Europe, Spain and Italy also show a notable preference for these foods, with around 80% of their populations adhering to diets influenced by the Mediterranean pattern.
Despite being one of the largest producers of fruit and vegetables, China does not show such high domestic consumption. Less than 60% of its population regularly consumes these products, mainly due to the high cost in some regions, the survey explains.
In the United States, about two-thirds of adults consume fruit and vegetables regularly, although this percentage is lower compared to the figures for Mexico and Argentina. The survey underlines that these differences in consumption patterns reflect significant variations in eating habits between nations, influenced by both economic and cultural factors.
