The government is urging Belizeans to buy homegrown produce to support local farmers.
Belize’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) has put a stop to issuing import permits for several vegetables, effective immediately. The ban covers different types of onions (purple, white, and yellow), potatoes, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, and celery.
Authorities say the decision was made because local farmers are producing enough to meet the country’s needs. The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) has confirmed that they will strictly enforce this rule. Anyone caught bringing in these vegetables without permission could face legal action, including fines or even jail time.
