The Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service reported on the state of greenhouse crops in Andalusia last week.
Almeria
In Almeria, the phenological development of greenhouse crops stands out, especially the setting of the first watermelons in greenhouses. Spring tomatoes are in various stages of growth, with the beginning of harvesting in some areas and the presence of controlled pests such as tuta and thrips.
Long-cycle aubergine plantings continue with harvesting and new plantings. Mid-season courgettes are in production, while spring courgettes show different vegetative stages.
Granada
In this province, sales of cherry tomatoes have been affected recently due to an increase in production. Despite protests about foreign competition, the situation persists. The harvesting of green beans and spring transplants is outstanding, although they are facing logistical difficulties and a lack of harvesting containers.
Huelva
This year's strawberry season in Huelva promises to be short due to insufficient rainfall so far. It is likely to end in April. The growers, concerned about the situation, are calling for action to optimise the conditions for their crops. For the time being, irrigation is limited to thirty minutes per day, further reduced in more temperate areas to economise on water.
On the other hand, blueberries of early varieties are being harvested, with Manila and Malibu being the most popular types, while the Star is losing popularity. Competition with imported blueberries from Morocco has led to a drop in prices, just at the beginning of the season for these varieties and while protests from farmers are being voiced.
As far as pests are concerned, moderate presence of thrips and aphids has been detected in the crops, which are being dealt with by means of biological control strategies in several of the plots.
