After a ten-year wait, Panama pineapple finally manages to enter the New Zealand market.
The Ministry of Primary Industry (MPI) of New Zealand, in an official act, has given the green light for the import of Panamanian fruit.
It is the result of hard work between the phytosanitary authorities of both countries, which included technical exchanges, inspections of Panamanian plantations by New Zealand experts and constant communication between both nations.
Pablo Rodríguez, National Director of Plant Health of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA), explained that the quality of the product and the careful agronomic management were decisive for New Zealand not to require a specific export protocol. Now, exporters only need to remove the crown from the fruit, request inspection at the packing plant and obtain the phytosanitary export certificate. It is time to celebrate this milestone in the Panamanian pineapple industry.
