Peru is still far from Ecuador in the red pitahaya trade
VU
Ecuador leads by far in red pitahaya exports with higher volumes and higher prices in the first two months of 2025.
The red pitahaya has become a star export product in South America, but while Ecuador consolidates its leadership, Peru is still looking for its space in the market.
According to recent data from Latin media, the differences between both countries in the first two months of 2025 are remarkable:
-Ecuador exported 20 times more red pitahaya than Peru, achieving revenues 25 times higher.
-The price per kilo of the Ecuadorian fruit was $3.68, while the Peruvian fruit was sold at $2.81, 30% less.
-Spain is the main destination for Peruvian pitahaya (59%), but the United States dominates the Ecuadorian market (88.4%).
-In second place, Peru exports 19% of its pitahaya to the United Kingdom, while Ecuador sends 5.4% to Spain.
-The Netherlands is also a key market for both countries, with 13% of Peruvian exports and 3.4% of Ecuadorian exports.
-75% of Peruvian red pitahaya is destined for the European Union, while for Ecuador this block represents only 10.2%.
Ecuador's dominance in this sector is due to a more mature and consolidated industry, with higher production volumes and better prices on the international market. Meanwhile, Peru is still in a growth phase, with the challenge of increasing its competitiveness and diversifying its export destinations.
With the growing global demand for this exotic fruit, the challenge for Peru will be to accelerate its production and strengthen its presence in the international market.
