"Our vision is clear: to make Malaysian durian a global icon. This ambitious goal is not simply a statement of intent, but a commitment to elevate Malaysian durians to unprecedented heights of recognition and appreciation around the world," said Eric Chan Yee Hong, Chairman of the Durian Manufacturer Association (Photo: topduriandelivery.com).
In Malaysia, durian production is experiencing remarkable growth, as are exports, which are generating income and boosting the agricultural sector.
Local media report that Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, has stated that the Malaysian durian industry is expected to record significant growth on the world market, reaching a turnover of MYR 238.4 billion (USD 49.9 billion) by 2033. This represents an increase of 101.69% on the MYR 118.93 billion (USD 24.9 billion) recorded in 2023.
In Malaysia, durian production has increased, with 455,458 tonnes produced in 2022 and 505,853 tonnes forecast by 2025. The majority of durian plantations are dedicated to top-of-the-range varieties such as 'Musang King', for which the country is renowned on the international market. The emphasis will always be on quality rather than quantity.
