FARM FRESH PRODUCE at PMA and SIAL despite the damage from the Matthew hurricane
United States
Thursday 13 October 2016
FARM FRESH PRODUCE estimates for a reduction of its production by about 25%.
In the state of North Carolina (NC) the Matthew hurricane caused heavy rains and strong winds.
Some areas received about 20-40 cm (10-16 ") of rain. The lowest areas are flooded, streams and small rivers overflow, roads and bridges were submerged or washed away, trees and electrical prevent circulation, the electricity is off. These conditions affect the harvest of sweet potato in the state of North Carolina.
Thus FARM FRESH PRODUCE highlights that 60% of the production was waiting to be harvested before the hurricane. Where the company had expected record yields, the new estimate has decreased by about 25%.
The total extent of the damage is not yet known. It will take days to put back machines and teams in the field. Organizing the logistics for sweet potatoes harvested before the event will be difficult until road conditions improve. Moreover freeze could occur soon. If the freeze comes, sweet potatoes left in the ground have to stay there.
FARM FRESH PRODUCE plans to resume the harvest next week.
