Diplomacy and negotiations between the 2 parties have resolved the dispute between Russia and Ecuador, the world's largest banana exporter and the main supplier to the Russian market.
According to information from the business newspaper Kommersant, which was picked up by the international press, the Russian Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service, Rosselkhoznadzor, has cancelled the ban it had imposed on 5 Ecuadorian banana exporters.
While the real reasons for this were far removed from the banana market, the dispute between Russia and Ecuador was leading to critical situations. Not only for Russia, which imports 9 out of 10 bananas from Ecuador, and which would have had difficulty finding alternative suppliers, and where a shortage of bananas was predicted as early as March, but also for Ecuador, which exports around 1/5th of all its bananas to Russia.
