Pineapple production is shrinking
FJ
For a decade pineapple production flexes, causing a drop in exports.
The decline in exports has melted income: statistics show that in 2004 revenues totaled USD 25 million, while in 2014 they totaled 17, 9 million USD. A deficit of USD 7.1 million in 10 years.
The reasons for this decline are many: lack of funding, input costs, exceeded variety, fall in the number of processing sites.
Professionals believe that the industry could collapse if measures are not implemented quickly. The government must support the pineapple producers with incentives similarities to those offered to cocoa farmers, for the pineapple sector to recover.
