Mexico reinforces banana crop protection against pests

More than 80 SENASICA technicians are supporting producers in 16 states to contain regulated pests and prevent the entry of Fusarium R4T.
Mexico is strengthening phytosanitary surveillance for banana production, with permanent technical support for growers in 16 producing states.
According to the Agriculture Ministry and SENASICA, more than 80 specialists are carrying out epidemiological monitoring, phytosanitary diagnosis, sampling, pest management and producer training to protect one of the country’s key food crops.
The strategy focuses on regulated banana pests, including Moko disease, banana rust mite and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4, known as Foc R4T. Authorities say Moko remains confined to 10 municipalities in Chiapas and Tabasco, while banana rust mite is limited to one municipality in Tabasco. Foc R4T has not been detected in Mexico.
Technology is also part of the monitoring work. In 2025, SENASICA used drones to inspect more than six million banana plants in Veracruz, Colima and Michoacán, while another 6.5 million plants were reviewed in Chiapas and Tabasco.
Border and entry-point controls remain another line of defence. Each year, authorities retain more than 22,000 banana fruits and plant materials considered a phytosanitary risk, which are destroyed to prevent pest spread.
For producers, the measures are aimed at protecting domestic supply, reducing the risk of pest outbreaks and maintaining confidence in Mexico’s banana production chain.
