In Algeria, the price of a kilo of bananas rose from 300 DZD (2.23 USD) at the beginning of 2024, to over 500 DZD (3.71 USD) during the recent Ramadan.
Local media report the words of the Minister of Commerce, Tayeb Zitouni, who declared that this surge in banana prices was unjustified in relation to world market prices. Specifying that the price in Algeria must not exceed 200 DZD (1.48 USD), he assured us that strong measures would be taken against this speculation.
In previous years, this surge in banana prices has already been noted in Algeria, where imported volumes are limited and where demand for bananas is high from September to May, and much lower during the summer months. This year, the Ramadam period has increased demand.
