51th Anniversary of kiwifruit
FJ
The American importer of a small fruit known under the name of Chinese Gooseberries asked the producer to find a shorter name.
Mr Jack Turner came up with the name "Kiwifruit" as part of Turners & Growers marketing response to this feedback and the name became a global brand.
It was 51 years ago yesterday (15 June 1959) that the iconic Kiwifruit was named by pioneers of New Zealand's horticulture export industry, Turners & Growers.
51 years on from naming the fruit, Turners & Growers remains at the forefront of the kiwifruit industry with several new varieties that it has developed and tested for production and export from New Zealand. The company holds the global Intellectual Property Rights to new varieties, ENZAGold™, ENZARed™ and the regional rights to Summerkiwi.™
