Belize looks to Guatemalan potato varieties for agricultural innovation

Potato farms in Poptún, Guatemala, are being visited by a delegation from Belize’s Ministry of Agriculture, led by Minister José Abelardo Mai. The purpose of the visit is to explore innovative Guatemalan potato varieties that could be suitable for cultivation in Belize and support agricultural development. The objective of the visit is to identify processing-friendly varieties that can enhance the value of perishable crops and provide long-term opportunities for farmers.

During the two-day visit, the team is addressing challenges faced by Belizean potato and carrot farmers, such as market access and oversupply issues. The introduction of Guatemala's white potatoes, already processed into popular products by companies like Frito-Lay, could offer a solution. Belize's similar climate and altitude make these varieties a promising option for local cultivation.

The ministry’s plan focuses on turning current agricultural challenges into profitable ventures, potentially reducing crop losses and improving farmers' financial stability. By learning from Guatemala's successful practices and engaging with experts, the delegation aims to bring innovative farming solutions back to Belize. The visit concludes today, January 24.
