Lower purchasing power in Russia pushes Azerbaijan to redirect persimmon exports

A recent trade agreement allowing duty-free entry into Turkey has strengthened the competitiveness of Azerbaijani persimmons.
Azerbaijan’s persimmon exporters are redirecting shipments to Turkey as demand weakens in Russia. According to Gadir Yusifov, head of the Azerbaijan Persimmon Producers and Exporters Association, the 2025 harvest is higher than last year, but sales in Russia have slowed due to reduced consumer purchasing power. As a result, prices on the Russian market have fallen by 30–40%.
To compensate, exporters are expanding into Turkey, where persimmons were recently added to a list of goods exempt from customs duties and VAT under a new bilateral trade arrangement. “This has increased competitiveness and opened new export opportunities,” Yusifov noted.
Azerbaijani persimmons are also shipped to Ukraine and Belarus, with plans to enter additional Middle Eastern and European markets. Harvest intake at cold-storage facilities will begin in the coming days.
