Catalonia consolidates its position as a key market
Organic food consumption continues to grow in Spain, especially in Catalonia, which has established itself as a key market. Despite this growth, the Spanish market is still in its early stages compared to the United States and northern Europe.
In 2023, Spanish families spent 3.3% of their food budget on organic products, with an average expenditure of 56.63 euros per person, 4.4% more than the previous year, according to the “Report on food consumption in Spain” of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. This consumption represented 2.3% of the total volume of food sales and 3.3% of its value.
For its part, the association Ecovalia estimates a higher expenditure, reaching 64 euros per person in organic products during the same year. Its president, Alvaro Barrera, highlighted in the presentation of its report 2024 the growth of the sector and the need to promote both per capita consumption and the recognition of the European organic seal.
Despite the increase, Spain is still far from the levels of other European countries. In Switzerland, spending on organic food reached 437 euros per person, while Denmark, Austria and Luxembourg recorded figures of 365, 274 and 259 euros respectively.
Catalonia stands out in the Spanish market, representing 631 million euros of the 3,000 million generated nationally. In 2022, Spain ranked tenth in the world market for organic products, with a value of 2,500 million euros, below countries like Sweden and far behind the 58,500 million of the United States. Europe, along with the United States and Canada, accounts for 84% of the global market for organic products.
