Projects and installations, at the forefront of the latest technologies, are multiplying in the country and are participating in the achievement of self-sufficiency food in vegetables.
Western sanctions and counter-sanctions against European products have not hampered Russian agriculture, which has grown its production and is even more important than it was 15 years ago in the country's economy.
Russia produced last year 120 million tons of wheat, according to Rosstat, the Federal Statistical Agency. The country has increased its production of wheat (+ 61%) and maize (+ 300%) by increasing the cultivated areas considerably. The export share of cereal production increased from 24.9% (2014-15) to 34.8% (2016-17) and could reach 40.2% (2017-18).
By 2010 the country had set itself the goal of achieving food self-sufficiency within 10 years. The objective is being achieved for some sectors, meat (poultry, pigs) and vegetables.
Significant investments involving tax incentives and state subsidies have been added to the various subsidies to farmers. In addition, favorable weather conditions, lower energy costs and a weak currency (ruble) can also complement the explanation for the boom.
