With the aim of reducing its onion imports, Malaysia has set up a strategy to increase its domestic production.
According to local media, Zabawi Abdul Ghani, Director General of the Malaysian Institute of Agricultural Research and Development, said that Malaysia needs to grow 1,447 hectares of onions nationwide. To achieve the goal of reducing its dependence on imported onions by 30% by 2030.
Last year, the institute launched 3 varieties of red onion (BAW-1, BAW-2, BAW-3), which are already being grown in several regions. The first harvests are expected around April or early May, and the quality of these varieties is comparable to that of imported red onions.
