In Germany, according to the latest estimates, the 2024 harvest should total less than the 2023 harvest, and should be the smallest harvest since 2013.
According to Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office, the 2024 asparagus harvest is estimated at 105,200 tonnes. This is the lowest harvest volume since 2013, and 13% down on the 2017-2023 average (120,400 tonnes).
According to Destatis, this drop in German production could be due to the reduction in the area under production, which is estimated at 19,600 hectares, or -4% compared to 2023. Weather conditions (heavy rainfall and late frosts) have also had an impact on the volume produced. Rising operating costs, inflation and falling demand have also led farmers to reduce their production areas.
