Experimental shipment of two containers of Panamanian pineapple to Spain and the Netherlands

A Panamanian company, with the support of ProPanama, has made an experimental shipment of two containers of MD2 pineapple to Spain and the Netherlands, totalling 3,360 boxes, equivalent to about 23,500 pineapples. 

 

The CEO of the company underlined the relevance of adding value to pineapple production through the use of the fibres of the leaves for the textile industry, thus promoting sustainable and eco-friendly practices. In this framework, ProPanama together with the FAO have developed studies that highlight the opportunities in the value chains of products such as pineapple, coffee, cocoa and chocolate, identifying them as vital axes for the growth and internationalisation of the Panamanian agri-food sector.

 

According to data provided by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MICI), from 2020 to April 2024, Panama has exported pineapple to the European Union, generating revenues of 20.6 million dollars and a volume of 39,776,182 kilograms, with Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Germany as the main receiving markets.
